On the MAPS: New Directions for The Psychedelic Renaissance

In 2017 we began The Psychedelic Renaissance project in an attempt to destigmatize psychedelic use. Through mass education, we hope to contribute towards a more open and balanced conversation about psychedelics, a re-evaluation of outdated laws and bring forward strategies to overcome our current mental health epidemic. With a new partnership from MAPS, we now have the increased support to achieve these goals.

As of October 2020, we received information for an exciting new progression, the Multi-Disciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) has officially become the fiscal sponsor of our project, meaning they will both provide financial oversight of the project and accept tax-deductible donations on the project’s behalf. This type of sponsorship will increase collaboration between the Psychedelic Renaissance and MAPS and provide us with greater financial infrastructure and expertise. Looking to the future, this will help build our platform, increase our presence and increase support for a global movement towards increased education around psychedelics.

MAPS is a non-profit research and educational organisation, founded in 1986. Their include developing psychedelics into prescription medicines, training psychedelic therapists and establishing treatment centres, supporting scientific psychedelic research and educating the public honestly about the risks and benefits of psychedelics and cannabis.

MAPS have been pioneers in pushing forward the psychedelic renaissance. From a society of strict drug prohibition laws and a taboo around psychedelics, MAPS have since completed the first LSD-psychotherapy trial since the 1970s, the first ever clinical trial of cannabis for PTSD and in 2017, they gained FDA permission to move MDMA therapy for PTSD forward into phase 3 trials, opening psychedelic therapy for the large portion of the public who are in need. They are also key sponsors of harm-reduction service “The Zendo Project”, manifesting their mission to improve safety around psychedelic use. A quote from Rick Doblin , MAPS founder, outlines the role of MAPS in our global renaissance:

“Our culture is going through a transformative process that bodes well for the mainstreaming of the medical uses of psychedelics and marijuana. One prominent example of this is journalist Michael Pollan’s brand new book on psychedelics, How to Change Your Mind, which as of today has reached #1 on Amazon’s bestseller list. With the continued support and donations of those who want to see us complete our work, our goal of obtaining approval for the prescription use of MDMA and marijuana is becoming much more than a dream.”

Much of the content in our documentary would not have been possible without the influence of MAPS. To have MAPS as a fiscal financial partner is an elation and we look forward to progressing further with their support. We are thrilled to be working together with an organisation whose mission is so well aligned with ours. Together we will be pioneering the progress of this revolutionary renaissance.

Moving forward with our project, we aim to release the documentary by 2021, offering free screenings. We will expand the project by introducing blog posts with exciting new conversations in the psychedelic sphere and a monthly newsletter to inform our members of new research and movements in the revolution. Our journey so far has led us across the globe, from the tranquil South West of the UK, to exciting European Psychedelic conferences, and all the way to the populous city of Denver, Colorado. We have had the honour to work with key spearheads of the revolution, including founder of the Beckley Foundation Amanda Fielding, leading Neuroscience researcher Chris Timmerman, MAPS Policy & Advocacy director Natalie Ginsberg and a whole list of like-minded, yet diverse, figures pushing towards a revised conversation about psychedelics and a new era of psychiatry. With our new sponsorship, we look forward to seeing where this journey takes us next.
